<![CDATA[Â鶹´«Ã½ Associate in Synthetic Inorganic Chemistry (AP12594)]]> /jobs/rss/click.aspx?ref=AP12594 /jobs/rss/click.aspx?ref=AP12594 About the role

We are recruiting for a postdoctoral research associate to work on a new, experimentally-driven research project in synthetic inorganic chemistry, funded by the Leverhulme Trust.

The project aims to provide new strategies for achieving "precious metal-like" redox catalysis using main group elements, and is driven by both sustainability concerns and fundamental academic curiosity. Other recent studies in this area have typically focused on trying to directly mimic the elementary reaction steps used by precious metals, despite these being poorly matched to most main group elements' "natural" reactivity. Instead, this project aims to develop new elementary steps that can be used to form alternative, "main group-friendly" catalytic mechanisms, while retaining precious metal-like net outcomes. To do this, the successful applicant will design, synthesise, and investigate main group Lewis acids with redox-active scaffolds that will enable systematic, "umpolung" transformation of nucleophiles into electrophiles, as a direct alternative to traditional reductive elimination steps.

We are seeking an exceptional postdoctoral candidate with a strong track record of successful research in the field of molecular inorganic synthesis, who possesses good organisational and presentation skills, and who can be an effective organiser of their own research and administrative duties. The latter will include coordination of research with external project collaborators, and assistance in the broader management of the Scott research group (including co-supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate research students).

Applicants must hold a PhD (or equivalent qualification) in chemistry or a closely related subject, or be close to completion at the time of applying.

Experience and expertise in the synthesis and manipulation of air-sensitive compounds are essential. Experience in the field of "transition metal-like" main group chemistry is desirable, but not essential for applicants with good experience in other areas of molecular inorganic synthesis.

Experience with NMR spectroscopy is essential. Experience with other relevant characterisation techniques such as XRD, CV, and/or EPR is desirable, but is not essential for otherwise strong candidates.

The potential to publish work in high quality, peer-reviewed journals is essential, and may be demonstrated either by an applicant's prior publication record or by providing suitable recommendations from the applicant's previous research supervisor(s).

Interviews will be held week commencing Monday 19th May 2025.

This position is offered on a full-time basis with a duration of up to 24 months, and a suggested start date of August 1st 2025. It will be supervised by Dr Daniel Scott, who can be contacted if applicants require further information about the proposed research or would like to informally discuss any other aspect of their application (ds2630@bath.ac.uk). More general information about the Scott group can be found here: .

<![CDATA[Â鶹´«Ã½ Associate in Computational Neuroscience (AP12553)]]> /jobs/rss/click.aspx?ref=AP12553 /jobs/rss/click.aspx?ref=AP12553 About the role

Applications are invited to join an international research consortium aiming to build a neuronal pacemaker.

Your role in the project will be to develop digital twins of neuronal circuits of the brainstem and train them on electrophysiological data to provide the correct adaptation of pulses delivered to the heart

You will work in close collaboration with a the team at Bath testing and validating the pacemaker device, project partners, external consultants, and clinicians.

Applications are invited for a postdoctoral position in computational neuroscience to build and train the digital twin of a neuronal pacemaker. You will estimate the network parameters that will configure pacemaker adaptation to physiological feedback. The digital twin model consists of Hodgkin-Huxley type neurons emulating the brainstem central pattern generators that control heart rate adaptation on a beat-to-beat basis. The model will be trained on actual electrophysiological recordings and electrocardiograms to produce the correct timings of pulses delivered to the heart following changes in respiration patterns and oximeter readings. The group has extensive experience in optimizing such models with data assimilation and has demonstrated the importance of adaptive beat-to-beat pacing for reversing cardiorespiratory disease. You will work in close collaboration with the postdoc testing and validating the pacemaker device by configuring its central pattern generator with estimated parameters and assist with coding. You will also collaborate with other team members, project partners, external consultants, and clinicians.

The post calls for a Physics/Computational/Engineering PhD or a closely allied discipline with a good understanding of dynamical systems and proficient at modelling them in C/C++ and Python. Additional experience in inverse problems, AI, neural networks, GUI coding or bioengineering would be a bonus. You will also have good organisational, time management skills, the ability to organise data for publication, and good communication skills to thrive within an interdisciplinary consortium.

The aim of the consortium is to provide much needed therapy for cardiorespiratory disease. By restoring heart rate adaptation and natural heart rate variability, the project will make a significant contribution to extending patients’ lives and improving patients’ quality of life.

The post holder will be a Physics/Computational/Engineering (or closely allied discipline) trained PhD with a good understanding of dynamical systems and proficiency at modelling them in C/C++ and Python.

Additional experience in inverse problems, AI, neural networks, GUI coding or bioengineering would be a bonus as well as good organisational and communication skills.

This is a fixed term role with an expected duration of 3 years.

We are seeking an outstanding Â鶹´«Ã½ Associate with proven expertise in the analysis of large environmental and/or climate datasets and application of numerical modelling tools to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team investigating ways to help underserved communities at risk from heat stress, rising sea levels, coastal flooding and extreme storms to adapt to climate change by creating resilient and sustainable buildings and infrastructure.

The successful applicant will work with three “Living Labs” with different climate-related challenges established at locations in Port Arthur, Texas, USA; Indramayu. Java, Indonesia and Medellin, Columbia.

The role of the Â鶹´«Ã½ Associate will be to assess and map in conjunction with the local inhabitants, the key climate-related risks at each Living Lab, including the impact on critical buildings and infrastructure, agricultural land and water security. This will involve characterising natural and built environments and identifying compounding vulnerabilities to assess and map risks, potentially including sea-level rise, coastal erosion, storm surge, flooding, landslides, high temperatures and land use changes. This will be achieved by compiling previous relevant studies, analysis of existing data (e.g. climate, topography, sea level, wave conditions etc) and application of numerical modelling tools. The exact risks investigated at each site will be informed by communication with local communities to determine the key climate-related stressors and collaboration with architects and social scientists.

As a member of Â鶹´«Ã½ Staff at the University of Bath, you will be encouraged to take up a minimum of 10 days professional development pro rata per year.

This is a full-time fixed-term 19-month contract. For an informal discussion about the role please contact Dr Tristan Kershaw (tjk28@bath.ac.uk) or Dr Chris Blenkinsopp (cb761@bath.ac.uk).

About you

  3. Surveys to understand pain management knowledge, attitudes, school engagement, stigma, self-efficacy and pain interference
  4. Synthesising the findings to develop educational sessions on period pain management, and evaluating their success.

The Â鶹´«Ã½ Assistant will work with a Post-doctoral Â鶹´«Ã½ Associate to support activities relating to the first three stages. This includes assisting with recruitment of schools and participants, scheduling and conducting interviews, and setting up surveys.

The Department of Psychology is seeking a skilled and highly motivated post-doctoral research associate to lead on a range of innovative projects related to a 5-year £3.5 million Wellcome grant.

The research, led by Prof Esther Walton, will determine the extent to which cognitive impairment, one of the most disabling symptoms associated with psychotic disorders, is underpinned by neurodevelopmental changes which often resemble premature aging.

The goal is to unravel advanced brain age on a cellular level, embed this within a neurodevelopmental model of psychotic disorders, and apply this knowledge to identify more effective (proteomic) treatment targets against cognitive impairment early in the disease process.

The Bath-based Â鶹´«Ã½ Associate will lead on the first Work Package of the project, exploring brain age acceleration in psychotic disorders and their risk factors using large-scale case-control neuroimaging datasets (e.g. HBCD, developing Human Connectome Project, HCP).

The Â鶹´«Ã½ Associate will join a collaborative team across 5 institutions (Cardiff University, University of Oxford, University College London, University of Cambridge, University of Jena), including individuals with lived experience and 5 other Â鶹´«Ã½ Associates.

The post holder will be encouraged and supported in pursuing career development opportunities.

We welcome applications from candidates who have:

  • A PhD in Cognitive or Clinical Neuroscience, data science / machine learning or related discipline
  • Extensive experience in neuroimaging data analysis ( e.g., structural morphometry using FreeSurfer and voxel-based methods, diffusion tensor imaging, resting state fMRI)
  • Experience and interest in conducting research in psychosis and cognition.
  • Experience with Python, Matlab, or R programming, advanced statistical skills and a commitment to research integrity & reproducibility (e.g., preregistration on OSF)
  • Expertise in working with infant brain imaging data
  • Excellent team working, communication, and time management skills.

Additional information

The position is available on a full-time (36.5 hours per week), fixed-term basis, expected to last three years, with the possibility to extend by a further two years.

We are open to a hybrid or remote working pattern from the second year onwards, after a successful one-year onboarding period in person.

Informal enquiries about this role should be directed to Prof Esther Walton (ew685@bath.ac.uk) and Dr Emily Taylor (et347@bath.ac.uk).

Project ‘POLARIS’ (production optimisation & large-scale data analysis for robust industrial systems) is being led by Domin, a UK leading company industrialising the additive manufacture (AM, 3D printing) of complex servo valves for all major sectors. In POLARIS, Domin will be scaling their manufacturing operations using industrial technologies and Bath will support by developing an additive manufacturing skills development pilot (teaching material, courses, hands on tutorials, seminars), addressing the AM skills shortage in industry.

For this 12-month PDRA position we are seeking a dynamic individual to develop and design a new Design for Additive Manufacturing (DfAM) skills pilot to educate and upskill workers, in the first instance in Domin and then in the wider industrial community. The skills pilot could be employed at university level, in CPD courses and online (e.g., MOOCs or other online learning platforms).

In combination with this, you will be undertaking longitudinal studies to capture the learning journey of an individual who has undertaken the new pilot course(s). This information can then be used to improve the course and map the upskilling to help refine the pedagogy.

About you

  • Working knowledge and experience of using additive manufacturing, specifically powder bed fusion
  • Design for Additive Manufacturing methods and tools (software)
  • A keen interest in developing educational strategies that distill complex concepts to a wider engineering audience
  • Capability to use a range of creative tools to help design engaging learning content (Photoshop and other similar tools)
  • Ability to plan out longitudinal studies to capture user insight data on the use of the new skills pilot

As a member of Â鶹´«Ã½ Staff at the University of Bath, you will be encouraged to take up a minimum of 10 days professional development pro rata per year
